What to Do If You Have a Gas Leak

A gas leak is a serious plumbing emergency. Hissing sounds near gas lines or a rotten egg smell in your home can both be signs of a gas leak. If you think you are experiencing a gas leak, take the following steps to ensure the safety of your family and reduce the risk of potential damage:

• Turn off the gas at the meter.

  If you are uncomfortable doing this yourself or are unable to locate your gas meter, call us or contact the gas company. Be aware that if the gas company does find a leak, they may lock your gas in the off position until the leak has been fixed. This can prolong the period of time it takes to repair the leak and leave you without gas for heat, hot water, and cooking for longer.

• Open doors or window to provide ventilation.

  Once the gas is off at the meter, it is important to reduce the concentration of the gas that has leaked to prevent an explosion. Do not turn lights, appliances, or exhaust fans on or off as any electrical spark has the potential to ignite any residual gas.

• Evacuate the building.

  Both natural gas and propane (LP) are poisonous and inhalation can cause both immediate and long term health problems. Evacuate the building until the leaked gas has been ventilated.
